bun&beats is a cultural event series in Berlin that highlights and celebrates Eritrean culture. It brings together live music, DJ sets, art, and discussions — all connected to Eritrea and its diasporas. The goal is to create a platform for artists with Eritrean roots, strengthen community networks, and share Eritrean culture with a broader audience.
bun&beats: celebrating our cultural heritage collectively through art, music and bun. The first edition of bun&beats takes place this Saturday at NM1 in Berlin. The new event series was initiated by Tmnit and Robel, two friends, who have long envisioned a gathering centered on Eritrea and its diasporas with a focus on art and culture. As members of the Eritrean diaspora themselves, they created bun&beats [bun means coffee in tigrinya] to build community through shared heritage, creativity and sound. Throughout the afternoon and into the evening, guests are invited to experience bun through the traditional Eritrean coffee ceremony that serves as the heart of social connection. The program includes a listening talk by Feven Keleta — a creative producer by way of Eritrea, based in Berlin. Feven is also the founder of Tapeshifta, a project dedicated to digitizing and archiving the music that tells the story of the Eritrean revolution, in which women played a major role. The evening will feature live music by members of Berlin’s own Eri-Band-Berlin, a four-piece ensemble based in the city, followed by a DJ set from host Tmnit to close the night.
