1910- 1960 | Joliba Skandallos

With Joliba Skandallos

In our second podcast episode of SKANDAL-LOS (great-granddaughter of Wonja Michaels's) takes you on a journey through time. From 1910 up until 1960, Lorena is shedding a completely new and personal light on the life of Martha, Theophilus Wonja Michael, and their children.

We are excited to share an interview with the late Juliane Wonja Michael, a Black Holocaust survivor read by Zari Harat: a painter, art lecturer, and storyteller who worked with the bpb as an editor and translator during the 1990s and had the pleasure of meeting all three Wonja Michael siblings. Additionally, the broadcast features a knowledgeable guest contribution by renowned publicist, poet, and researcher Philipp Khabo Koepsell, who provides further historical context on Black lives and resistance during that time.

Together, a unique picture of trauma and resilience is drawn, interwoven with personal anecdotes from the family, bold political visions, and key educational aspects.

At the heart of the project lies an intersectional perspective on the intergenerational impacts of racism, classism, and sexism, conveyed through personal anecdotes, historical archive material, questions of identity, and the reflection of social narratives. Challenging dominant images of masculinity and highlighting the often-forgotten influence of women in family and societal histories form the central focus of this.
