Young Soul Rebels Film Screening

On February 17th, Cinelogue will host a screening of Sir Isaac Julien’s landmark 1991 film Young Soul Rebels as part of our Black History Month Program in partnership with adidas. A pioneering film for Black and queer British cinema, the film is set against the backdrop of the Queen’s Silver Jubilee and follows soulboys Caz (Mo Sesay) and Chris (Valentine Nonyela) who run a pirate radio station in 1970s East London. When their friend is murdered cruising in a local park, social tensions between skinheads, punks, the police, and the two friends threaten to escalate.

Scored by a dynamic soundtrack featuring sounds by Funkadelic, Junior Murvin, Parliament and X-Ray Spex, the film raises urgent and timely questions around marginality, national and racial identity. Film introduction by Nora Bess from Cinelogue, followed by an open-format discussion afterwards.

This screening is open to all, however we warmly encourage RSVPs from Black folks and those RSVPs will be prioritized if we reach capacity.

Complimentary drinks and light snacks will be provided.
