Critical Awareness of Audism in Culture and Society

On February 28, Dana Cermane will be hosting a workshop on Critical Awareness of Audism in Culture and Society. The workshop is part of our Mixed Feelings series and analyses the structural and cultural mechanisms that lead to the discrimination of Deaf and hard-of-hearing people. Through historical examples and current debates, strategies to overcome audism and promote inclusion are discussed.

Societal Critical Approach: Audism – the preference for hearing individuals and the discrimination of Deaf people – is deeply embedded in societal structures. This work questions why hearing ability is considered the norm and what consequences this has for Deaf people. Using case studies, historical developments, and personal experiences, it highlights how audism continues in schools, workplaces, and the media. The goal is to raise critical awareness and foster a more just society for all.

Practical & Solution-Oriented Approach: Audism affects the lives of Deaf people in various ways – from barriers in education and employment to cultural misunderstandings in society. Critical Awareness of Audism in Culture and Society provides an in-depth analysis of these issues and presents concrete solutions. And how can we, as a society, actively work to reduce discrimination?
