The Breakfast Show with Oscar, live from Weserstr. 166. Tuesday-Friday 10-12 CET.
In collaboration with Minor Figures.
On Friday 27th October I covered the breakfast show filling in for the usual host Nikola. For those outside of Berlin and Germany, Neukölln, where this station is located, is one of the more diverse neighbourhoods in Berlin being home to thousands of Palestinian, Arab and African migrants. For the last three weeks plus and counting, like the rest of the world, we’ve gone to bed reading about the genocide in Gaza, each day we wake up to more news and videos of devastation.
Walking to the station through the streets of Neukölln last Friday, I could see and feel the increased police presence that has become a suffocating feature of life here these last few weeks. As horrific violence is inflicted upon the citizens of Gaza on a daily basis, here in Berlin, there have been reports and evidence of police brutality and intimidation, with residents being prevented from speaking up, showing solidarity and mourning innocent loss of life during these last few weeks of escalated violence.
After weeks of media and governmental misinformation and efforts to silence critical discussion, solidarity and protest, we are seeing an increased global recognition for the plight of the Palestinian people with demonstrations of hundreds of thousands of people across the world. Throughout the show I mentioned the Global South United protest organised by Palestine Speaks, Jewish Bund, Abolish Deportation Prison BER and more. This demonstration, held on Saturday 28th October 2023 was a mass protest against colonialism, racism and apartheid in Palestine and worldwide. From the first estimates following the protest, it has been reported that more than 10,000 people walked from Oranienplatz through Kreuzberg in solidarity with the Palestinians and the oppressed peoples of the Global South. This show is a dedication to them.
Our hearts are in Gaza. Cease fire now. End the Occupation. Free Palestine.
Our hearts are also in Cameroon, Congo and Sudan.
Where words can’t be found, I hope that the music speaks as loudly and clearly as intended.
