India's two classical music traditions — Carnatic from the South and Hindustani from the North — between them use somewhere between fifteen and eighteen distinct string instruments. In this episode, I trace the history of some of these remarkable instruments and share a few pieces that have stayed with me, music that I think captures something essential about what each one can do.
