aequa Radio aims to spotlight people and movements that are worldbuilding during collapse — it’s about the folks who are DOING THE DAMN THING when it comes to midwifing new and beautiful worlds into being while we try our best to topple empire and kick our addiction to modernity in the process.

On aequa Radio episode #48, I’ll be digging into SOLARPUNK: movement, aesthetic, imagination-juicer for a future beyond modernity’s grasps.

As a lifelong ravenous reader of various streams of dystopian fiction, the discovery of speculative fictions such as solarpunk shifted something inside me. This imaginative genre asks: What if, instead of just imagining what it will be like to survive within collapse, we could imagine a future beyond it? One in which the myth of separability from the land and each other feels as silly as the myths of Greek god/ess dramas feel today? One in which reciprocity, accountability and the honorable harvest are central to how we live? One in which everybody has enough — food, shelter, safety, belonging — without the need to exploit the planet or each other? To quote jarral boyd, what might it look like to “re-indigenize” rather than simply decolonize our ways of being in and with the world?

If, as Tony Cade Bambara writes, “the role of the artist is to make the revolution irresistible,” then what role do solarpunk and related art movements have to play in drawing people into the myriad revolutions needed to shed our current ontologies and move towards something regenerative?
