In our new series 100% Post-Punk, we dive into a movement that emerged in the late 1970s and went on to shape one of the most influential eras in modern music, spawning countless offshoots and subgenres. This series is our attempt to make sense of it all.

We begin by stepping back to what came before: proto-punk. An often overlooked and loosely defined moment, proto-punk sits between garage rock and punk. It wasn’t a unified movement, but it was essential, laying the groundwork that punk would build on, and that post-punk would ultimately push even further.
