The poetic, Urdu, Persian term "Mehfil-e-Sama" means a gathering for spiritual listening, and is often rooted in Sufism, Qawwali, Ghazals of love and longing, and other devotional music lacing the sonic heritage of South Asia.
In this show, we explore qawwals like Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, neo-sufi, contemporary tangents of Arooj Aftab, and poeticism and activism of writers such as Rumi and Mirza Ghalib. Also featuring field recordings that offer glimpses into the spaces of Lahore, Pakistan.
