Maarja Nuut is a singer, violinist, electronic artist and composer whose work spans a vast range of rich musical worlds. Classically trained, she has since delved into a number of disparate genres: Hindustani classical music while studying in New Delhi, Estonian archival sounds, field recording, and, more recently, the outer limits of electronic and experimental sound.
Fuelled by instincts and curiosity, this exploration comes from an inner necessity — a desire to probe each world’s musical language, techniques and expressive qualities, and to fold and swirl these elements into her own mesmerising art.
Her distinctive sonic language merges archaic resonances, contemporary electronics and minimalist composition into a hypnotic, deeply textured and singular whole. Nuut’s work has been presented on renowned stages internationally, establishing her as one of the most distinctive voices in contemporary Estonian music.
Since the release of her solo record Une Meeles in 2016, Nuut has toured extensively as a solo performer. Her third solo album, Hinged, released in August 2021, received widespread critical acclaim, further reinforcing her reputation as “one of Europe’s most innovative musical artists, always looking to dive deeper” (Future Music). Known for her compelling, often immersive live performances, she has also collaborated with artists including Sun Araw, Hendrik Kaljujärv aka Ruum, Nicolas Stocker and Shards.
