Bana Group for Peace and Development is a feminist, non-governmental network of activists rather than a traditional organization. Founded in January 2017, Bana operates on a consensus basis, prioritizing grassroots collaboration. The members come from and are based in various regions of Sudan, particularly in marginalized communities, including North Darfur, West Darfur, South Darfur, South Kordofan, West Kordofan, Blue Nile State, Red Sea State, El-Gezira State, White Nile State, Northern State, Khartoum State, Uganda and Egypt.
Bana’s work started in 2017 when a group of women came together for workshops on nonviolence, digital security, and problem analysis. Putting that knowledge into action they started initiatives in their own communities and decided to form a group during the Point of Transformation workshop in El-Geneina, Darfur. Bana’s first project, Voices of the Margins, brought them back to listening, learning, and working across our differences, shaping the way Bana organizes today.
