I understand, I respect - but I don´t accept

There are so many different opinions on so many different topics in this world. Nowadays we have experienced that the majority of people are so focused on themselves that they do not know how to listen and exchange anymore. What does it mean to disagree on a topic with respect for each other and how can you stay respectful although other people's opinions are the opposite of yours?
