Rumi von Baires

Rumi (he / him) has an inquisitive mind and soul when it comes to music and the communities built around it. Born and raised in Buenos Aires to Capeverdean families, music has been an integral part of his upbringing, soaking in all the influences from jazz, Brazilian and African artists.

Rumi got his first DJ gear in 2005 while studying psychology in Florida, but it was after moving to Vienna in 2016 that things started to fall into place. Initially active in the local ballroom scene, he soon thereafter found his tribe of house-heads, forming the collective “A party called Jack”: a regular gathering in Vienna that celebrates house music and its roots in funk, soul and disco, attracting a devoted community of dancers and music lovers.

In October 2021, he co-launched the GAZE series, a regular LGBTQI+ event with the aim of centering the “queer gaze” in electronic music, visual arts, live performance and fashion. Ever since, GAZE has established itself in the Viennese queer community, collaborating with many local artists and collectives, while showcasing local and international DJ acts.

As of 2023, Rumi is now fully submerging into djing and music production (watch out for 2024!), while combing his love for club culture with a decade-long experience in social research. In his club sets, Rumi swiftly navigates between all shades of house, disco, breaks and techno, while incorporating jazz elements, soulful vocals and Afro-Latin rhythms.
